Stunning 300D

1985 Mercedes Benz 300D Diesel

This Pearl Blue metallic (DB355) on navy MB-Tex 1985 300D, originally sold in Georgia, has traveled 110,500 miles since it first arrived on our shores 21 years ago.  That's only 5200 miles per year.  We've verified the mileage with auto check and we believe it to be correct.  Auto check indicates this is a one owner car, however we cannot verify this other than with this report.  We're happy to email the report to you or Fax it.  After 21 years of care this one has relatively few minor imperfections, has been serviced regularly and is ready to be enjoyed.  As many of you know, this is the last of the best 123 body Mercedes Diesels, these are extremely durable vehicles that regularly see half a million miles or more with proper service and routine maintenance.  This particular 300D has it all, last year, ice cold air converted to R134A, original Becker, very good looking paint, and an extremely nice interior.  It's an original 300D ready to be put to use by the next owner.  As you know these cars are a popular choice to convert to Bio Diesel.  I think this one would make one of the nicest Bios out there.

 Exterior Condition:

The metallic paint is glossy with deep shine, and is quite stunning.  Panel fit is exceptional on this car, please look closely at the pictures of the panels and hood fit, it's very good.  Also note how clear the headlamp plastic surrounds appear.  Generally these turn yellow and crack with age and stone chips, not here, they are clear and very nicely presented.  All rubber is still soft and black as it should be, nothing has gone brittle or is sagging.  The chrome still looks very nice.  There are a few scuffs here and there as any vintage car might exhibit, but overall the paint shows very well.  The main detractor is light checking on the lower panels, and discoloration around the fuel door.  The clear coat inevitably suffers from diesel spillage in this area.  The wheels look very good, they do not have the inevitable clear coat fading from brake dust.   Also, the jack points are solid, as are the rockers, this is a testament to this southern car's history.

Interior Condition:

The interior shows very well.  Seats are navy blue MB-Tex, all inner stuffing is in good shape, and they are not worn out, cracked or ripped.  They look and feel very good with no sagging, and the springs and bolsters are in great shape.  I'd say they're just getting broken in.  Please have a look at the dash pictures, we could only find one small crack behind the binnacle, I've never seen a blue dash that looked this good.  This car had to be stored in doors to have such little cracking and fading.  The rest of the interior is in fine shape.  All of the wood is in very nice condition including all pieces along glove box.  The headliner is completely intact, and looks good with no sagging.  The carpets look very nice, and are free from heavy wear.  One note the Becker Grand Prix is not working, I think it's the fuse behind the radio, but I haven't checked it.  Since it isn't working we're not sure if the hirshmann automatic antenna is working.  This car still has the original Becker tape deck cleaning cassette, and the original hirshmann antenna cleaning cloth, we haven't seen either of these items in quite a while.

Mechanicals:

Mechanically, this 300D is in fine shape, the previous owners have obviously cared for it, and there are numerous service records to attest to this.  Service was performed by a local Georgia shop throughout the life of the car.  The emergency brake is working well, as are all lights, interior and exterior, all gauges work including the odometer.  I have noticed the tachometer is intermittent, there is a relay that controls it and I think they come and go, you may need to replace the relay, or it may work for a long time, or don't worry about it.  Honestly, I've found nothing out of sorts, the cruise control is working, as is the air conditioning.  There is a sticker under the hood that indicates the Air was converted to R-134a in 1999.  Tires are a set of matched Kuhmos with plenty of tread remaining, and a good spare mounted on a matching rim.  The car rides great, handles as it should, shifts out as it should.  When I first opened the hood I was very surprised with the cleanliness of the engine compartment.  All fuel injection lines look almost polished.  The original hood pad is there, and everything looks great under there.  It also looks like it has a brand new Girling master cylinder and reservoir.

I'd say this is a 300D to drive and enjoy, it's rare to find one that simply hasn't been used up.  Given the service records of this example I feel it makes a fine, well presented driver, in a desirable modern color that's definitely stood the test of time.  Nothing has the durability, reliability, and economy  of the Mercedes 123 Diesel, they look great run great and are the last of the 'built like a tank' Benzes.

INSPECTIONS: This item is described to the best of the my ability, however I am not a mechanic and these are classics.  Some items have worn in the past 1-40+ years.  I will help the buyer with arranging any desired inspections, but all costs for PPI (pre purchase inspections) are the buyer's responsibility.  All PPIs must be performed before the auction ends.

NO RESERVE, PRIVATE AUCTION: I am a firm believer in free market pricing, and as such, I am confident this vehicle will bring a market correct price on eBay.  I also believe when a person bids no reserve they aren't trying to beat an inflated 'retail' price, and they get their vehicle at a real value.  It's worth what is paid.  A word on bid retractions, I am blocking those who retract their bids from continuing to bid on an item.

ADMINISTRATIVE FEE: A $95 administrative fee is added to all transactions, included in this cost are all paperwork and 30 day tags.  Buyers outside of Georgia pay the final auction price + the $95 fee.  Buyers in Georgia pay the final auction price + $95 + applicable sales tax.  A 3% fee will be added for PayPal transactions, this covers my cost as a seller, and is their charge to me.

KEYS and ACCESSORIES: Since these vehicles are used, please remember that books, extra keys, remote entry keys, CD cartridges, etc...do not always remain with vehicles throughout their life. We will not be responsible for these minor accessories.  These items are all replaceable at any local factory dealer or electronic store.

I reserve the right to end any auction for any reason at any time.
